Yvonne, so nice to hear from you! I'm really pleased that you, too, knew the Green Door and as you say, yummy food. Let's have tea next we run into one another; I'd love to hear about your days as a reporter!
Thanks, Joy! I'm still processing the yelling. Was this a Chinese restaurant? I'm trying to think if I ever had that experience, or whether I was so focused on I was with that I didn't notice. Maybe the higher-end Asian restaurants in Vancouver.
I can imagine prairie visitors being delighted with the meal adventure!
I loved the Green Door. What wonderful memories your story conjured. When I was an impoverished cub reporter, my work mates introduced me to this yummy eaterie.
Zoe, I never went to the Green Door (we used to frequent the Ho Inn) but I've heard about it. This is so redolent, the specifics really take me there. A great bit of memoir. Thanks.
Thanks, Barbara. I confess that writing it made me hungry for Chinese food. Yes, the Ho Inn was one we went to as well. There was some cooking going on! Still is, I guess, but Pender Island feels like a world away from Pender Street.
A fun read, Zoe. We had The Lucky Key in Ottawa, when I was growing up. That's where we went for birthday celebrations and where we brought all our prairie visitors who were impressed with the decor, loudness, and the delicious food. I remember everyone seemed to be yelling--waiters, cooks in the back, even people sitting at the tables, but that was part of the meal adventure.
