My mother was a fashion model as I grew up until about 10 years of age. She was beautiful, and very down to earth, not taking fashion of the day too seriously. However, by osmosis, I integrated such things as colour matching, conservative, modest. Still trying to climb out of that hole! Thanks for this wonderful essay.

Thanks, Leslie! I think it sounds like you started life in terms of fashion awareness in a pretty positive fashion. It wasn't until I worked for a winter selling clothes at some then-trendy boutique in the Bay that I even learned what size I was! Before I'd come home with something that seemed to fit in the store and then mysteriously was too big or the sleeves were too long or it just plain fit funny.

Wow, mom as a model. I'm impressed.
